Following the commitment by more than 130 countries to work together in order to collectively double the global average annual rate of energy efficiency improvements from around 2% to over 4% every year until 2030, the IEA in collaboration with the Super-Efficient Equipment and Appliances (SEAD) Initiative under the Clean Energy Ministerial has launched a new online training course on appliance efficiency policy.
Appliance standards and labelling programmes have been proven to significantly reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions in highly cost effective ways, but not all countries have such programmes in place, and all countries can gain by learning from each other and from existing experience. International collaboration on such policies and the technical standards that underpin them are beneficial for manufacturers, consumers and governments alike as it can help make efficient appliances cheaper and more affordable than they otherwise might be, e.g. through convergence in test methods used to assess performance.
The European Commission is a co-sponsor and co-leader of the SEAD initiative.
